A Bit About Me
Since moving to Hobart, Tasmania, I've loved every second of having the outdoors within such close proximity. I spend my spare time hiking, snorkelling, and diving, as well as simply exploring the many beautiful areas of the state. Alongside my interest in environmental science, I have also pursued my artistic side. Painting has provided a way for me to express my passion for nature and STEM to others through working on public murals and displaying work at local galleries.
Questions and Answers
Tell us about someone who inspires you and why
How did you become interested in STEM?
What are you most looking forward to about studying STEM at university?
How will the Women of STEM Scholarship assist you?
Sir David Attenborough has long been an inspiration throughout my life, ever since I watched my first nature documentary. Not only do I admire his depth and breadth of knowledge of the world, but more importantly, his ability to inspire passion in others. His storytelling has educated so many and helped illuminate the extraordinary parts of nature that people would otherwise remain oblivious to. I hope to convey a similar sense of wonder to others and encourage my community to care about the environment around us.
Pursuing STEM was the natural progression of my curiosity about the world. From a young age, science provided explanations and helped me understand the things I loved – and now, as I've grown, it is helping me protect them too. STEM offers me a tangible way to make a difference and preserve the precious natural environments in a changing climate. The more I learn about the world's unique ecosystems, the more I want to help them thrive.
I can't wait to get out into the field and spend time in the incredible wild spaces across Tasmania. I love learning through hands-on methods and am excited for the practical elements of my studies, like sampling or species identification. My degree also allows me to further my love of diving and pursue professional scientific qualifications to assist in underwater research.
The Women of STEM scholarship provides the opportunity to focus solely on my studies by removing significant financial stress. With such assistance, I will be able to take the time to extend myself through extra opportunities, such as research programmes and exchanges during the semester break. I am grateful to be able to dedicate myself to my studies in such a way and am excited to make the most of my university experience.
What job do you hope to pursue after graduating from university?
Though I don't have a specific role in mind just yet, I know that I want to pursue a job in which I can get out into the outdoors and help make a difference. One ambition is to work with the Department of Natural Resources and Environments and play my part in managing the extensive parks and reserves of Tasmania, learning about integrating sustainable tourism and conservation.
